Essential Oils Uses

ESSENTIAL OILS AROUND THE HOME

12 TOP TIPS

Essential oils and aromatherapy work on an emotional level to soothe and balance the body and to generally encourage harmony between mind and body.
Essential oils are commonly used in massage when mixed with carrier oil, for bathing or for various forms of inhalation, these are the ways that we find essential oils used in aromatherapy, when used correctly they can enhance your health and wellbeing.
Combining the beautiful aromas of essential oils can bring a soothing state of relaxation, by massaging or bathing, relieving the stress that we all have from time to time, which can often lead to health problems.
Using essential oils and aromatherapy is a natural way of promoting your health and wellbeing.

Research over the years has shown that essential oils like Lavender, Sandalwood, Clary & Sage, etc. have a relaxing quality, and can help with sleeplessness.
The use of essential oils to fragrance the home has been a method used for decades to promote a soothing, calming, relaxing atmosphere by using vaporizers or oil burners.

There are numerous ways in which to use essential oils in the home, below are 12 suggestions of both old and new ideas on how to use them, the last paragraph gives tips on how to safely get the most out of them.

12 TOP TIPS

1/ Use essential oil to fragrance your drawers containing linen, clothes and bedding to leave a gentle fragrance.
If you find the ones you really like are not giving a strong enough aroma then Rose, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine, Lavender or Geranium will give a stronger aroma.
Always remember the contents of your drawer will absorb some of the aroma of the oil, so always choose the fragrance, which you like.
Place just a few drops of your favourite oil on to a cotton ball or tissue and leave in the drawer.

2/ Use essential oils in your bathroom, fragrances like Pine, Fir, Lemon, or Grapefruit, either separate or mixed together gives the room a refreshing natural aroma, or just experiment with the fragrances you like, mixing two or three or use them on their own.
Place a few drops on a cotton ball or dried flowers and place them in a discreet position to give maximum effect.

3/ Use essential oil to help with neutralizing kitchen smells while cooking or preparing food.
Place a couple of drops of essential oils of Cinnamon, Cardamom or Cloves in a pan of water while it simmers it will help to neutralize the cooking smell.

4/ Using essential oils when vacuuming the carpet gives the room a fresh clean aroma, the citrus oils work better with this method, always choose the oils that you prefer.
Place a few drops of Mandarin or Lemon on a small piece of paper or a bit of tissue place on the floor and let the Hoover suck up the paper then while your cleaning it refreshes and leaves a gentle aroma around the house.

5/ Occasionally we all have stale air around our homes either by cigarette smoke, stale cooking smells or the dreaded sweaty socks, by mixing certain oils you will leave your house with a nice clean fresh smell.
Pine will give a forest or mountain aroma but by mixing Pine with a Citruses oil like Mandarin or Lemon will give an extra boost.
Place a few drops of your favourite essential oil in the water in a fine spray bottle, give it a good shake before you use it and then spray around the house.

6/ If you have a pet then odours from animals can be a bit off putting, disperse unwanted pet smells by using a Geranium or Lemongrass essential oil in a bucket of hot water then cleaning or mopping the areas effected you will find it will give a much nicer smell.
Just add 8 – 10 drops of essential oil to ½ a bucket of hot water before adding your usual cleaning fluid.

7/ Cleaning your fridge / freezer, use fragrances of Lemon, Bergamot, Orange or Grapefruit.
Half fill a bucket with clean water mix 3 drops of the essential oil of your choice, mix with a drop of washing up liquid, this will help disperse the oil, then wipe it out with cloth to leave a nice gentle fresh clean smell.

8/ Wardrobes and cupboards are best with a fragranced with mix of Lavender, Geranium and Basil essential oil mixed together.
Place a couple of drops in a cotton ball and place in your wardrobe or cupboard then every time you open the doors you will get a fresh aroma

9/ Refresh your carpets with a mixture of baking soda or cornstarch and your favourite essential oils.
This is little more difficult as you need a airtight container, then add 10 drops of essential oil to 200 grams of baking soda or cornstarch, mix everything together well and store in the airtight container for at least 2 days, before you use give the mixture a good stir then sprinkle over your carpet and leave for a few hours, then Hoover the carpet in the normal way to leave it smelling fresh and clean.

10/ Trainers and shoes can be refreshed with a few drops of Lemongrass, Patchouli, Peppermint or Geranium.
Add the essential oils to cotton balls, placing one in each shoe or trainer will revive and leave them smelling much nicer.

11/ Existing Potpourri can be refreshed when it has lost its fragrance, almost any oil is suitable but the floral fragrances will always work the best, be aware that mixing two or three oils may suit better and give a more natural fragrance.
Take the existing Potpourri and place in a suitable bag, and then add a few drops of the chosen essential oil to the contents and keeping the bag tightly sealed shake vigorously.

12/ Keep small rodents and insects at bay using Peppermint essential oil, this has method has been used successfully in deterring ants, spiders, mice and other creepy crawling insects away.
Place a few drops on cotton wool balls or tissue and leave in your loft, garage, shed or greenhouse.

The above is only a few ideas of what you can use our essential oils for and how you can use them around the house, once you have become used to using essential oils and you start to get more used to the benefits they give, you will soon be able to invent your own ways to use the oils.
If you have already got some oils then try mixing them to see what fragrances you can come up with.

Experimenting with essential oils is how you learn and how you create your own balance of aromas. By starting with a few drops of any citrus oils like Grapefruit, Mandarin or Lemon then adding maybe a drop of a more floral oil you can not go far wrong.

By writing down which oils you mix together and how many drops you put in then you will find out what aromas you like and don’t like. Then by adding a drop more or adjusting the mix you can create a variation of aromas by just using 3 oils. Aromatherapy can be fun by testing out what works for you.
